Yi Dian Tang - Mother of pearl book academic edition
Design Story
This book collection documents the Taiwanese mother-of-pearl embedding technique, preserving this traditional skill. As the wood carving industry has moved to Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines, the art of mother-of-pearl has been gradually lost. To capture and preserve it, we interviewed the last-generation artisans in Hsinchu, Taiwan, photographing their work, analyzing and experiencing the technique firsthand, and collecting antique images. We also recorded their stories and reflections on this craft, helping people understand the beauty and cultural significance of mother-of-pearl in Taiwan.
Strategy
For the packaging and the book, we chose an iridescent color coating to represent the shimmering light of mother-of-pearl. Additionally, we applied 3D-printed ink to the cover to create a tactile texture, evoking the sensation of traditional wood-carved furniture and creating a sensory connection to the craft itself.
